The shift from STEM to STEAM over the past few years has begun to meet the needs of 21st century learning. STEAM provides students the opportunity to practice the standards of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math as a means to allow for exploration, creation, and development. At WPMS we offer this growing Enrichment class to all students 6th-8th grade. Our STEAM Team developed curricular standards to integrate STEAM opportunities for all WPMS students. In addition, many core teachers (Science, Social Studies, Math, and Language Arts) differentiate final products with a STEAM experience, giving all students the opportunity to work with tools such as graphic design, 3D modeling, and drafting. Exposure to a STEAM curriculum allows students to explore new fields and skills that align with students' future career paths. Students who discover a passion for STEAM during their middle school years will have a variety of pathways to continue this development of potential STEAM careers in our district's high school courses.

Here are just some of the skills and projects students in our STEAM program learn and experience:

  • Coding
  • Engineering
  • 3D modeling and printing
  • Graphic Design
  • Digital Art
  • Architectural Drafting
  • Hands on exploration of architectural concepts
  • Panther News Network (student-produced school news broadcasts)

Kenya-Read-Project.png

Three students in Mr. Honeycutt’s STEAM class had the idea this year to do a project that benefited another community. They decided to partner with a school in Eldoret, Kenya to raise money to help create a library for Twins Bright Academy, a school that WPMS has worked with in the past. As part of their STEAM class they formed the "Kenya Read Project" and created bookmarks that they will be selling soon and are offering coffee, tea, and treats to staff members twice a week for a donation. Their hope is to raise more than $1,000 to contribute to Twins Bright Academy’s library for their students and orphans within their community. You can learn more about the project here.
